Vanity plates

Vanity plate pictures

A. 6 characters: 620 euro

1999 style. This plate was seen on a car rented for officials on the occasion of the Belgian National Day (21 July).

1999 style. Seen on 16 December 2009 on a Mercedes in Leuven.

1999 style. Seen on 18 January 2010 on a BMW 6-series in Brussels.

1999 style. This plate was seen on an Audi R8 belonging to Audi Belgium, who also have other AUD-1__ plates. Note that this one was made in 1999, as I saw on the hologram.

2008 style. This plate was seen on an Audi break featuring a sticker reading 'B&O Diest', which is the name of an Audi dealership near Leuven. Seen in Leuven on 14 December.

2008 style, seen on a Porsche Carrera in Francorchamps, 18 April 2010.

1999 style. Seen on a Mini One D in Antwerp, 13 February 2010.

1999 style. This plate belongs to the mayor of Brussels, Freddy Thielemans.

1999 style. This plate dates from 2002, as the hologram shows (click on the picture to enlarge, then look above the CV sceal).

2008 style, made in 2008; seen on a Volvo XC90 in Leuven on 26 February 2010.

1999 style, seen on a Range Rover in Knokke.

1999 style. Seen on a Mitsubishi in Brussels, 19 January 2010. 'EVO' refers to one of Mitsubishi's cars, the Evolution, although this plate was on a common Mitsubishi.

1999 style, seen on a Porsche 997 Turbo MkI in Leuven on 18 December 2009.

2008 style, seen on a VW van (from a Porsche tuning company) in Francorchamps, 18 April 2010.

1999 style. Seen on a Porsche Boxter S in Leuven on 15 December 2009.

1999 style, seen on a Porsche 911 in Francorchamps, 18 April 2010.

1999 style. Seen on a Porsche 997 in Francorchamps, 18 April 2010.

1999 style. This plate was seen on a Smart belonging to 'Immo Norman', a real estate company in Leuven. 260 stands for a part of the phone number of the company (00 32 475 260 777).

2008 style (1st one I could take a picture of). This plate probably belongs to someone called Isabel or Isabelle; it was seen on a BMW in Knokke. It is now on a Ferrari California.

1999 style. This plate was seen on a BMW X5 in Knokke.

1999 style. Seen on a Mercedes E280 CDI in Brussels, 19 January 2010.

1999 style, made in 2002. This plate was seen on 16 January 2010 on a Jaguar in Leuven.

1999 style. This plate was seen on a VW New Beetle in Leuven.

1999 style. This plate was seen on a Saab in Westende, and it can be assumed that it belongs to a lawyer or a judge.

2008 style, seen on a Porsche 997 Carrera 4S in Francorchamps, 18 April 2010.

1999 style. This plate was on an oldtimer Ford GT-40 (hence the 'O').

2008 style. Seen on a Mercedes in Leuven, November 2009. I found on a forum that this plate was offered to the car's owner by his kids for his 50th birthday.

1997 style. This is a vanity plate because plates starting with an S were issued as of August 1999, while this one is clearly a 1997 style plate (i.e. it does not have a red-painted CV sceal). Seen on a Mercedes in Maastricht on 1st August 2009.

1999 style. Seen in Leuven on a BMW 5 GT on 15 December 2009. (Btw, 'sec' means 'dry' in French, but I don't think that was the reason for purchasing a SEC vanity plate.)

1999 style, seen on a Toyota in Leuven on 19 October 2009.

1973 style, seen on an Aston Martin DB9 Volante in Namur on 28 June 2010.

1999 style. This plate was seen on a car rented for officials on the Belgian National Day.

1999 style. This plate was seen on a BMW.

1999 style. This plate was seen on a Toyota in Brussels.

2008 style. Seen in Middelkerke.

1999 style, seen on an Audi Q7 in Francorchamps, 18 April 2010.

1973 style. This is a personalized plate because the V series was not issued before 2006, thus in 1999 style, whereas this plate was made in the 1990s using the 1973 style. VDB is a common abbreviation for people named 'Van den Broek', 'Vandenbrandt' and such. Seen in Leuven in November 2009.

1999 style. This plate was seen on a Ferrari in Oostende; it probably belongs to someone called Van de(r) W___. Other VDW plates (VDW-111, VDW-666) were spotted in the same neighbourhood as this one.

1999 style. This plate was seen on a car rented for officials on the Belgian National Day.

1999 style. This plate was seen on a car rented for officials on the Belgian National Day.

1973 style. This is a personalized plate because the V series was not issued before 2006, thus in 1999 style, whereas this plate was made in the 1990s using the 1973 style. Seen in Knokke.

Rare vanity plate for a motorcycle; this is the second one I've seen so far, the first one being WOO 001. I recognized this one as personalized thanks to the year hologram indicating '06', while plates starting with the letters WI were made in 2008 only. Note that 'Wim' is a popular Flemish and Dutch first name

1999 style. This plate was on a Maserati GranTurismo spotted in Leuven on 12 November 2009. From the hologram I could see that it was made in 2007. The letter combination means "I'm 007", from dialectal Dutch "K z'n 007" or "Ik ben 007".

1999 style, seen on a Porsche 911 in Francorchamps, 18 April 2010.

1999 style, seen on a Porsche 997 Turbo in Francorchamps, 18 April 2010.

2008 style, made in 2008 (which explains why I consider this plate as a vanity plate). Seen on a VW Phaeton in Brussels on 19 January 2010.

2008 style. Sorry for the bad quality pic, but I took it in an underground parking lot in Leuven.

2008 style. It apparently belongs to the same owner as plate 001-BEL, I would say. The first one was seen on a BMW X6, and this one on a van used by an electronic equipment company.

2008 style, seen on a Porsche Cayman S in Francorchamps, 18 April 2010.

2008 style. I cannot find a definite meaning behind these letters, because it must be someone's initials (e.g. Charles Van Dale).

2008 style, seen on a Porsche 911 in Francorchamps, 18 April 2010.

2008 style. I suppose that the owner wanted the plate to be read like 'Bert' (due to 8's resemblance with B) or like 'Achtert', since '8' reads 'acht' in Dutch. Seen in Middelkerke.

2008 style, seen on an Open Insigna in Leuven, 31 March 2010.

2008 style, made in 2008. It was on a Renault Scenic. Seen in Leuven on 14 December 2009.

2008 style. Seen on a Porsche 997 Carrera 2 in Leuven on 24 February 2010.

2008 style. It was seen — quite surprisingly — on a Citroën Jumpy in Brussels on 28 December 2009.

2008 style, made in 2008. Seen on an Audi in Brussels, 19 January 2010.

2008 style. First code 12 plate I could take a picture of. Seen in Knokke.

2008 style, made in 2009; seen in Leuven at night on 21 October 2009 on a Jaguar XK 2009.

2008 style, seen in Leuven on a Ford Transit from Trigon Security.

2008 style, seen in Leuven on a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, 15 April 2010.

2008 style, seen in Leuven on 4 December 2009 on a Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

B. 5 characters (since 2001): 875 euro

1999 style. Seen in Brussels on 21 July 2007.

1999 style. Seen on a Mercedes ML in Brussels, 19 January 2010.

1999 style; seen in Antwerp on 1 August 2008.

2008 style; seen on a Porsche 997 Carrera 4 in Brussels on 19 January 2010.

1973 style; seen in Brussels. It belongs to Opel Belgium (who have got a whole B plates series, ranging from B.8000 to B.8125 approximately). I doubt whether this series was not simply a reserved series, because vanity plates did not exist.

1999 style; seen in Leuven on a Mercedes ML. (Bad quality because I took the picture after after sunset.)

1999 style; seen in Leuven on a Mini Cooper on 1 December 2009. The DIV has never issued plates with four digits and the letter A to avoid confusing them with the ministers' A plates. However, it is now possible to get such a combination, except one of type 'A.1111' —but we never know, since the DIV is pretty much inconsistent.

1999 style; seen in Leuven on an Aston Martin V8 Vantage on 02 March 2010.

2008 style, seen on a Porsche 993 Targa in Francorchamps, 18 April 2010.

1999 style, seen on a Porsche Carrera in Francorchamps, 18 April 2010.

2008 style, made in 2009; seen on an Aston Martin DB9 in Middelkerke, 10 April 2010.

2008 style (note that the separating dash is on the horizontal middle line of the plate, and not anymore towards the bottom line). This plate can be recognized as a vanity plate because plates ranging from GA.001 to GZ.999 (and other combinations in codes 7, 8 and 9) were never issued because they were reserved for motorcycles. Seen in Middelkerke on a Citroën C7.

1999 style. This can be recognized as a personalized plate for two reasons: 1) Plates ranging from GA.001 to GZ.999 (and other combinations) were never issued because they were reserved for motorcycles; 2) Plates with three times 0 were never issued but are allowed on personalized plates. Seen in Knokke on an Audi Q5.

1999 style. Seen in Overijse on an Audi Q7.

1999 style. Seen in Leuven on a Mercedes-Benz S V221 on 19 May 2010. It belongs to dealer Katelijne Motors.

1999 style, made in 2006. Seen on a Mercedes SL 500 in Leuven on 9 December 2009. In colloquial Dutch, 'ne' means 'a', hence 'ne 500' means 'a 500'.

This is a personalized plate, since plates ranging from PA.001 to PZ.999 and other combinations in codes 7, 8 and 9 were never issued because they were reserved for motorcycle series. The DIV sceal is under the dash, not anymore in the middle of the plate.

1973 style, made in the 1990s. Vanity plates made up of five characters were officially introduced in 2001, but some people managed to get some plates, such as the B.8XXX plates for Opel (see above) and several dozens of VW plates for Belgian VW importer, D'Ieteren. Incidentally, this plate was on an Audi (since D'Ieteren also imports Audis).

1997 style, made in 1998. Seen on a VW Tiguan in Brussels, 19 January 2010.

1999 style; seen on an Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Brussels, 19 January 2010.

1999 style; seen on an old Porsche Targa in Brussels, 19 January 2010.

2008 style, made in 2009 (according to year hologram); seen on a Cayenne S (it's not a 911!) in Leuven, 25 November 2009.

2008 style, seen on a Porsche 911 in Francorchamps, 18 April 2010.

1999 style; seen in Brussels on a Land Rover on 21 July 2007.

2008 style, made in 2008; seen on a Porsche 997 Turbo Cabriolet MkI in Leuven, on 8 March 2010.

2008 style, seen on a Mercedes S 63 AMG, 18 April 2010.

1999 style; seen on a Mitsubishi Colt in Antwerp, 13 Februari 2010.

This plate, seen on a Ferrari next to the Middelkerke casino, was the first that I saw that had three times 0 on it. It struck me as odd because the website of the DIV states that one cannot choose three times 0 on vanity plates – just as such a combination is forbidden on ordinary plates. However, since then I have spotted a few other vanity plates with three times 0, like C.000.D, DP.000 (see above), GM.000 (see above), HP.000, MM.000 and even four times 0: 0000.A (see picture from the Francoplaque website) or 00.D.00. This implies that the DIV has changed its 'three/four times zero policy' a few years ago, just like it did with the use of the letter O on personalized plates. Note that it is also rare to spot a code 10 personalized plate – the only other two I saw were Z-350-Z (on a Nissan) and M-111-M.

I suggest that this plate can be read as 'No boob', with zeros standing for the letter 'O' and 8 for the letter 'B'.

21 October 2009, Leuven.
I know it is a vanity plate not only because it was made in 2008 style — and not in 1973 style as you could expect from a N plate, which were issued in the 1990s and unlikely to have been remade due to damage/ageing since then —, but also because I saw the 219-NVY plate on the same type of car, a Range Rover. 'NVY' probably refers to the word 'envy', while '219' can refer to a birthdate (21 September).

I saw both 945-ASC and 966-ASC plates on Peugot Partners parked side by side, which belonged to Technilift, a company mending lifts. 'ASC' refers to the word 'ascenseur', meaning lift. This was not obvious at first, but when I took a glance at the year hologram, I read '08'. Normally, code 12 plates starting with the letters AS were only issued in 2009 and would bear a '09' hologram.

This combination can strike as odd as a vanity plate, but is is one since the newest plate to date was 248-BCY, so the DIV cannot already have issued D plates. '708' can refer to the car owner's birthdate (7 August) and 'DPG' to his or her initials.

I thought that plate 222-XXX would be the highest code 12 number I would ever see (excluding test plates of course), but I was proved wrong. Besides, it is even higher than plate 560-YEH, which is on a Lamborgini Murcielago LP-560.
